Pallets are used extensively by shipping companies as part of their packing and transportation processes. These pallets are made in wood or plastic varieties although the latter are often preferable. Being more durable, longer lasting, relatively maintenance free and hence more cost effective plastic pallets should be the first choice for many businesses.

They come in a variety of shapes and sizes although for the toughest option, look out for heavy duty plastic pallets.

Here is why you should discard your wooden pallets in favor of plastic:

  • They are subjected to less stringent checks at US and European ports meaning time and therefore money is saved. Wooden pallets can be infested with pests which means they are checked much more vigorously.
  • They are typically stronger and more durable meaning that there is less likely to be any damage to the cargo and also that they do not need replacing as often.   • They are reusable across a variety of loads. They can easily be sanitized after moving one type of good to enable the loading of another.
  • They have a more expensive initial cost than wooden pallets, but because they need replacing less often, over the long term they are a more cost effective option. They do not need much maintenance and do not decay leading to them lasting 10 times longer than wooden versions.
  • They have a high tolerance for different weather conditions and storage environments. They maintain their shape and integrity and hence protect their load in the process.
  • They are recyclable, either by being sold off to other users or by being melted down and made into new plastic products.
  • They are nestable making for more space saving and safer storage as they cannot slip out of position.
  • Their uniformness ensures safer handling by forklifts and other equipment. They are less likely to topple over and damage either the cargo or handlers.

Standard sizes are 48″ x 40″ x 5.9″ and they normally come in black, gray, green or blue, although color is probably not going to be a key consideration and could be customized if desired. You can even have your company’s logo printed on the deck to ensure brand identification.

You can find them to buy singly or in packs of five or ten. They are built to be accessed by a forklift or other lifting gear from all four sides and can hold 7500 lbs of static load. Prices vary but the more you buy, the cheaper they are. Typical prices start at $65 for one heavy duty plastic pallet going down to $55 per pallet if you buy ten. When buying watch out for static and dynamic load capacities as well as shipping costs.

Plastic pallets are so versatile that they are used by a number of industries. Manufacturers can store and move part finished products on them. Food industries can use them to move food and beverages as they are washable and therefore hygienic as well as odorless and resistant to leaks.
