Plastic storage boxes are extremely popular because the material is perfect for the task. They have all the advantages of other materials but share none of their disadvantages.

Why is plastic perfect for storage? One big reason is rusting. A plastic storage box does not rust, which makes it versatile. It can store wet products and dry products alike without incurring any damage to the container itself or to the contents. That quality alone makes plastic the material of choice for all tupperware producers across the globe.

Plastic is lightweight, making it easy to push up into the attic, and easy to lift out from under the bed. It is also thin and strong, which makes it particularly useful for storage, because it holds up to the passage of time without taking up much space, like wooden storage boxes do.

Plastic is malleable, which means that when all you want to do is place the last book into the case, you can squeeze it in. There is a reason why many luggage producers implement plastic into their designs. For the same reason, plastic makes dependable and sturdy storage containers.

The only material that costs less than plastic is cardboard. But cardboard storage boxes break apart easily after just a few uses, and are therefore unreliable for transport. The USPS uses cardboard boxes because of their weight and cost; however, they would save money in the long run if they switched to reusable plastic boxes (while saving the environment).

Plastic is also easy to clean because water does not have any negative effects on its look or life. Wood, cardboard and metal storage boxes all have difficult relationships with water, but plastic does not care if it’s washed. While this does not sound like an enormous advantage at first glance, take a second to consider how many things are spilled on or fall in a puddle. If those things were cardboard, they would fall apart, and if they were metal, they would rust.

Plastic storage containers can be useful, as well, because of the numerous designs that are available. One can custom order a box to fit specific dimensions of the closet or attic, whereas the equivalent for metal or wood would break the bank. Cardboard, on the other hand, is merely not available in many shapes apart from the basic box, and those are hard to find and order.

For all of these excellent reasons, plastic is used to store clothes, food, accessories, miscellaneous holiday decorations, and whatever else one does not use frequently. On the other hand, some children even use plastic storage underbed to keep toys out of sight, pulling out the storage bins and opening them during playtime, then placing all of the toys back before replacing the box under the bed and going to sleep. The relative ease with which plastic storage boxes open and close make them excellent and versatile choices for storage.
